I was in a minor accident last night.
So I'm down on Bank St. in Ottawa meeting a friend for Indian food. I find a street spot on the south-bound side of Bank, so I pull up parallel to the car in front of my spot, look behind me and see that a green chevy cavailier is behind me. The driver has stopped behind where I will park. Perfect. I begin my parallel parking, but the green car decides not to wait, and tries to pass me. Result: the front driver's side corner of my porsche cayenne rubs across the passenger side of the cavalier.
Now, Bank is a narrow 2-way/2-lane road. You cannot pass someone when they are parking without driving on the other side of the road. I think that if she had actually driven on the other side of the road, she'd have not ran into me. Instead, she decided to stay partially in the south bound lane.
When I got home, I called up RBC Insurance, who I deal with. They are awesome. My vehicle has already been picked up and taken to the auto body place, and I'll hear from them and the adjuster on Monday. If I want a rental car, I get that too...delivered to my door. The person who recorded my claim said that I "may be at fault", because I was going backwards. How can I be at fault? I was legally parallel parking, and this person decided to unsafely pass me. If I am at fault, that means that you should feel free to run into someone who is parallel parking if you need some body work done.
There is little damage to the cavalier. I think it will all buff out. There is a bit of paint damage to my vehicle...minor, but they probably have to repaint and buff the front grill assembly, which on the porsche is all plastic and painted. That will surely cost me a few bucks if I am at fault (deductable is $950). I'm a bit pissed, and I certainly hope I'm not deemed to be at fault.
Here is where it happened, right between Cooper and Lisgar.
Update: I'm deemed to be "at fault" since I was going in reverse. Note to self: need body work? Just nail someone while they are parking.
