What happens when you do unlock the iPhone and use it in Canada?
I'll admit that the iPhone would be hard to use as a blackberry replacement. This is based on my recent experiences with the iPod Touch which shares the same basic platform (and on-screen keyboard) as the iPhone. What makes the iPhone so darn special is not email ... it is... the WWW!
The Safari browser on the iPhone/iPod Touch is nothing short of phenomenal. So much so that email is no longer the killer mobile app.
Now, its possible to unlock an iPhone and use it on Rogers in Canada. What is not possible is to get an unlimited data plan...which means that if you use your iPhone for what it is good for... excessive web browsing, twittering, digging, facebooking, well, you could rack up to $700 a month in data charges.
This exposes the root of the the problem here in Canada right now. So much of our innovation right now is in mobile -- doing important/interesting/useful things while mobile, and our lack of competition in the mobile network area is really hindering explosive growth in this area.
It is important that this changes, and soon.
